Classrooms

Explorers

This classroom is for babies under the age of rising two. This room is warm, bright and spacious.

Millies offers a wooden approach to learning with our toys and furniture and offers a free flow outside approach with access their own garden. Our main focus is to emotionally support the babies, by developing key bonds with their key adult/s and then to follow on their home routines as they begin their early years journey with us. The room layout is conscious of their innate ability to explore and their instinctive ability to be physical within a safe, warm and welcoming environment. They will be supported and cared for by passionate and knowledgeable early years staff who will always be there to communicate their day with you.

Their classroom embeds a holistic approach. We will provide many opportunities to explore through sensory lead activities and special interactions with staff.

“We have created a safe, caring and stimulating environment in our purpose built Baby Room. Using movement, sound, colour and touch. Babies are encouraged to explore, develop and practice their skills and above all enjoy their second home. Outdoors, your child will also enjoy a dedicated baby garden area, in our garden we provide age appropriate adventure play and develop the babies early physical skills. We believe in making learning FUN!”
Room leader of Explorers.

“As an experienced early years educator and room leader, the heart beat of my classroom is the children’s attitude to learning, trying and doing their best. My staff and I will promote British values and implement them in our classroom by encouraging and promoting all faiths and backgrounds throughout our day to day experiences. We will ensure that staff teach children about our classroom rules in a clear and positive manner whilst giving the children opportunities to plan and lead their own ideas. Staff will plan activities direct from their daily observations and their professional judgements. My team will strive to maintain excellent parental relationships by providing clear and positive discussions about your child’s day.”
Room leader for Investigators.

Our Outdoor Garden Provisions

We are extremely fortunate to have 4 large outside garden areas that are all different, each one provides a different learning space for children to acquire skills and become competent and independent learners.  Children will be able to gain and master new skills and become more self proficient with the support of experienced teachers. Staff will develop children in all areas of their learning and development from communication and language, understanding the world, physical, mathematical and personal, social and emotional. Our ambition is for children to foster a love of learning within the outdoor environments and experience a wide range of activities, but above all to embrace and love their gardens as much as we do!

Baby Room Garden

The babies have access to their own garden from their classroom, this is via wide opening doors that lead straight into the garden area. It is an astro turfed space, providing a safe floor space for activities to be carried out on. It is a large space to enable the babies opportunities for lots of physical movement.

Garden 2

This area is easily accessible from both the toddler and preschool rooms giving children the opportunity to choose to be inside or to explore outside. The area is covered in astro turf making it suitable for the children, providing a safe and soft cushion to play on. Here we will use this area to extend their learning from inside to outside where it will include a variety of mark making and creative experiences as well as developing children’s understanding of nature. They will be able to plant flowers to encourage bees and butterflies as well as growing vegetables and herbs to develop their senses, expand their curiosity and to connect with the world around them. With the use of natural resources we will be able to take the learning from the inside to outside, encouraging language and communication and different mathematical concepts.

Garden 3

Physical play is an important part of children’s development.  It supports their gross motor skills and to use up energy which promotes good eating and sleep. This area is covered with wooden bark which makes it a lovely sensorial experience.  Here the children will be empowered to use a variety of resources; crates, tyres, planks of wood, to enable them to independently create their own climbing equipment to climb, balance and walk on, supporting them to build on their creativity and problem solving skills.  The bark is suitable flooring that if the children were to fall or tumble it will prevent any surface injuries. The children will be able to use tools such as spades and spoons to dig and explore as well as toys, like diggers to scoop and transport the bark.

Garden 4

Investigative play is amazing and children love to explore and experiment with different materials.  In this area children will be able to play in the mud to mix and be creative, whether making a mud pie or soup. This area gives children the freedom to investigate what happens when things are added together, can we add stones/leaves/barks or petals? Stir it round with a stick. This area is calming and develops independent thinkers, doers and innovators.  Using the water to create beautiful potions and perfumes and exploring scientific concepts when adding different textures together like dry sand and water.  Children are given the freedom and encouraged not to worry about getting their hands dirty.

Both toddlers and Preschool have easy access to the outdoor environment.  When outside the areas will be appropriately staffed allowing children the free flow between the different gardens.

Ofsted

Our aim is to provide the very best childcare possible. Like all nurseries, we’re measured on the level and quality of childcare by Ofsted. Our Borehamwood nursery is new and yet to have its first inspection. We actually can’t wait as it will be a formal measurement of our ambitions and goals to achieve high standards in childcare. The Borehamwood Team

Manager

My name is Michelle and I am the Deputy Manager. I have a total of 18 years working and caring for children and for the past 11 years I have been a Deputy Manager for a preschool and nursery and more recently a Montessori Nursery where I was also Preschool Manager. In both these roles I was the designated SENCO and Lead Safeguarding Officer.  My experience also includes working as a Play Leader for a holiday club and Forest School which ignited my passion for outside learning by creating imaginative and independent learners.  I value the impact that is has on children’s holistic development, being physically, mentally and emotionally healthy as well as building a sense of self belief and resilience.

I have a range of qualifications which include my CACHE level 2 and 3.  I have a love of learning and am always looking for ways to develop so I went on to then complete my Foundation Degree. I attend regular training to ensure that I keep up to date with any changes as well as enhance my own knowledge and practice. This includes Safeguarding, First Aid, Food and Hygiene and SENCO.

I love working with children and it comes naturally to me to bond and build positive relationships with children. I thrive on making sure that I provide them with an environment where they feel cared for, happy and nurtured.  I want to support them in their independence, confidence and self esteem to make them secure learners through play and enriched, learning experiences so they can embrace a love of learning.

In my free time I love to read and watch a good film.  I enjoy quality time with my family and hope to motivate myself soon for a return to the gym or running.

Security and CCTV at Millie’s Borehamwood

Safety and security of children and staff is paramount and our nursery has as CCTV system in place. Footage is monitored mainly for surveillance and security purposes. Security was a main focus for the design of the building which is set in delightful grounds with secure outside play areas.

Entry into our welcoming reception can only be accessed via our secure entry video phone system to our classrooms and main entry buzzer system. We have installed security cameras which monitor the main entrance and approach, our provisions are monitored by CCTV and we invite parents to watch this from the reception area to ensure their child has settled.

Our reception area is managed throughout the entire day by the management team.

The collection of the children is by a known, authorised parent/carer or guardian and a password system is in place.
